Why is civil society important in Afghanistan?
Civil and proxy wars in Afghanistan have for years destroyed all socio-economic, cultural, and political infrastructure and deprived Afghans of the opportunity to build a nation, now among the many areas that civil society focuses on and among the various functions it performs. Strengthening democracy and contributing to development is crucial.
In particular, civil society and civil society organizations play a key role in the development and democratization process through:
• Providing basic services such as primary education, health and providing shelter, counseling and support services to disadvantaged groups
• Request efficient public services to the relevant authorities
• Encourage people to participate in politics
• Monitor the performance of the government and other stakeholders in providing services and holding them accountable for their work
• Participate in the local development program
• Defend human rights for the needs and priorities of your constituency (especially marginalized groups) and defend government deficiencies
• Assist in mediation and conflict resolution and assist in social innovation
• Influencing government policies and lobbying for change
Introduction
The importance of civil society has increased in developing countries.
A vibrant civil society in Afghanistan can ensure that millions of vulnerable Afghans have a voice and play a pivotal role in the struggle to advance political, social, economic and constitutional rights. Civil society can identify and address issues that need to be addressed collectively.
Civil society organizations (CSOs) also play a key role in reducing government services or lack of services, especially in countries with long-term crises.
Thus, in a country like Afghanistan affected by civil strife, civil society often has limited space and capacity to operate. Small, informal civil society organizations with limited facilities and capacity to provide effective support go beyond their local communities. Therefore, following the strengthening of the capacity of these institutions, the Herat Civil Society Support Organization has been established to work towards providing sustainable resources to ensure the effectiveness of civic activities.
